Treasurer
"Rein. It is a matter of great importance that "the Colonial Treasurer" should hear regular returns and general fulfilment of conduct as hitherto, and therefore it is proposed that Mr. Hare be otherwise provided for, or that a bonus of one year's salary be granted on his retirement, and that a Clerk be employed on £280 a year, in whom may be found the necessary qualification of good handwriting, and such a person may probably be procured here.
The reductions at Hong Kong having been completed, Mr. Hare's case was referred to the Imperial Treasury to deal with, and that department decided that he was not entitled to the gratuity recommended by the Governor of one year's salary. It was mentioned by Major Blackall that salary butant to the Treasurer, paid Mr. Hare a month's salary £125, not 6 months' salary.
Probably the Treasury took into consideration the fact that he had been 18 months on leave during his whole tenure of office, which amounted to 3 years and 10 months.
With this decision Mr. Hare has expressed himself...
